World Federation of Public Health Association Statement
The Global Ageing Network joined the World Federation of Public Health Associations in supporting the notion of a new Global Pandemic Treaty.
A new international treaty could reaffirm the legitimacy of WHO by enabling the development of a wide range of interventions, including a comprehensive health surveillance system with independent verification of state reports and investigation of new outbreaks. It could also establish mechanisms for the adequate supply and equitable distribution of health resources across countries, thereby reducing health disparities through prioritization of geographical areas in most need. Indeed, a treaty should consider as part of the preparation strategy for future pandemics not only the distribution, but also the development and production of essential medical supplies guaranteeing intellectual property exemptions, knowledge sharing, technology transfer and expansion of industrial capacity.
