HelpAge International recently presented their efforts in providing palliative care among the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Despite the challenges posed by illness and war, HelpAge has played a crucial role in delivering essential humanitarian assistance to older adults in need. Their initiatives have included providing social workers and doctors to conduct regular check-ups and distribute hygiene kits, among other forms of support.
During the presentation, profoundly moving and inspirational stories were shared by individuals assisted by HelpAge. These testimonies demonstrated the organization’s significant contributions in reducing suffering among older adults in Ukraine.
In a related development, Dr. Rachel Coghlan authored a research report titled “At Home, Even the Walls Help”: Exploring the Palliative Care Needs, Experiences, Preferences, and Hopes of Older People with Serious Illness in Ukraine. Dr. Coghlan’s report addresses the unique challenges faced by older adults in Ukraine, particularly during an ongoing war and health issues. Dr. Coghlan emphasized the emotional toll of disease and war on these individuals.
The study also explains the importance of providing compassionate care and support to older adults within their homes, where they often find solace and comfort amongst adversity.
