Design Notes: The primary project goal was to build on the success of the original community by offering a complementary but unique living environment on a remaining corner of the site. The design team aimed to blend with but not copy the established architectural vocabulary, using a lighter material palette and lighter scale of detailing. The planning, scale and detailing was intended to create a boutique hotel ambiance. The new six-story residence, located at the entry of the existing 19-acre CCRC campus, creates a welcoming gateway and offers 173 additional independent living apartments.
A large, central courtyard serves as the focus for the layout of major interior public spaces, with dining areas (casual, formal, display, and private), tea lounge, and library with direct views of the garden. Other building amenities include spa and wellness facilities, a multipurpose room, arts and crafts room, 20-seat theater, billiards and game room, club room, juice bar, and retail space.
To facilitate sustainability, the team developed a design that respects adjacent green preservation areas. The building is also situated to best capture the views of neighboring park lands. Other sustainable elements include green roofs, high-efficiency lighting and climate controls, operable windows, dual water system (well and potable), durable exterior materials, and upgraded wall and roof insulation systems.
